Offshore and onshore, an exclusive product for all types of marine installations

Transformers and reactors for marine applications are distinguished in two different types of installations: offshore and onshore. For each of these installations, additional distinctions can be made depending on the application and use. GBE develops these exclusive products in cast resin, dry type and oil-filled versions. For offshore shipboard installations, the transformer most suited to auxiliary services is the air-insulated type, while the cast resin type is more suited to generation and propulsion with windings in medium voltage. In the latter case, there can be multiple primary and secondary voltage and the design used also guarantees the supply of 6-12-24 pulse and up to 36 pulse converters. Ships can be cruise ships, container ships, military ships, icebreakers, oil tankers, merchant ships and ferries.

Transformer ventilation can be natural or forced for improved compactness, but if the heat produced needs to be contained inside the transformer station, IP54 protection boxes are used with AFWF cooling.

For installation on oil platforms, both cast resin and oil-filled transformers and reactors are used. The former are more compatible in environmental terms and the latter against the risk of explosion.

In the last 20 years, many offshore wind farms have been developed. Offshore wind farms are constructed far from the coast and are able to exploit stronger currents than those recorded on land, thus producing a greater quantity of electricity. Moreover, they have a reduced visual impact and do not compromise day-to-day human activities, especially those in close contact with the land, such as in the agricultural sector. The term onshore on the other hand refers to all that installed on the coast, in particular in ports. In some cases, transformer stations are installed in containers. The transformers can be multi-tap to supply ships from various origins, or make use of special construction techniques for mounting on port loading and unloading cranes. These transformers, in addition to being the onshore marine type, must satisfy special requirements concerning movements and vibrations due to the movement of the cranes. In these cases, the design makes use of coil compression systems using springs and bracing. For marine applications, GBE is able to guarantee certification with all certifying bodies: Bureau Veritas, RINA, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, Russian Register, ABS and more.
